West Shore Rugby Sweatshirts
Wed 1/23/2008 11:09 PM

Players, Parents, Supporters, and Alumni,

We officially started off the 2008 rugby season with a great practice today at the Susquehanna Sports Center!  We had a very good turnout of new and experienced players.  The new players really picked up on things quickly and it looks like there will be some solid additions to our team.  It really got me fired up for another great season of rugby!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I got an email today from our apparel vendor, Pat, from Front Row Outfitters.  He gave me a price on West Shore United Sweatshirts and West Shore United jerseys.  These items are optional, so please don't feel like you need to order either one.  The sweatshirts will be navy blue with "United Rugby" on the front in red.  The cost for the sweatshirts is $20.00.  The jerseys are $57.00 if 18 or more are ordered.  A parent volunteer will be handling the orders.  I will send out her contact information after I communicate with her tomorrow.  Anything that is ordered must be paid for in advance.  Checks should be made out to West Shore United Rugby.

I want to thank the 24 players that have already paid their $50.00 in dues and turned in their paper work.  We have already had over $1100.00 in expenses this season between tournament entry fees ($825) and rental fees for indoor practices ($300.00) and your dues money has really helped offset that cost.  If you haven't paid your dues or turned in your paper work, please do so as soon as possible.  As soon as you pay your dues you will also get your shorts and socks if you are a new player.  At this Friday's practice someone should also ask the Susquehanna Sports Center if they would like to buy and ad for our program.  It could be an easy ad sale for some enterprising young rugby player....

Once again, great practice today!  I'll see you all on Friday 3:30 at the Sports Center.

Regards,
Coach Robinson

Rugby Conditioning Reminder
Thu 1/24/2008 9:35 AM

Players, Just a note to remind you of the conditioning sessions I have been advertizing. To date only four players have signed up. (Pat Connolly, Jake Fink, Rod Keller, and Jeff Lancione). Going forward you do not have to sign up - just show up.

During the course of a rugby match, play does not stop all that often allowing you a chance to catch your breath. In tournament play you can expect to play at least two to three matches. You have to be prepared to go the distance! The team that runs out of steam first WILL lose.

I plan to run conditioning practice at the Camp Hill Park on Saturday's at 1pm for the foreseeable future. Please consider attending. The goal is to build your endurance so that you can meet the challenges of the sport.

Depending on team consensus we can change the time or day as needed.

Where to Meet: Seibert Park in Camp Hill - click on link - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=Siebert+Park,+Ca mp+Hill,+PA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.226656,94.306641&ie=UTF8&ll=40.248612,-76.9 26098&spn=0.043761,0.092096&z=14&om=0
Duration: 1pm-2:15pm (please be prompt)
What to Wear: Cold weather gear, gloves, hat, suitable shoes for running. (Avoid basketball shoes)
What to Expect: We will start with distance work in and around the park and eventually add a variety of short sprinting and hill climbing activities as we progress. Hope to see you Saturday!

Rugby Boosters Meeting
Sat 1/26/2008 12:45 PM

Parents:

We had a general player and parent meeting early this month to kick start the rugby season.  At that time, we have gotten several parent volunteers to sign up for various things.  We are all truly appreciative for that, which brings me the need to schedule a boosters meeting in order to actually prepare for the season with you.  If you were unable to attend the general meeting and would like to come to this meeting, or if you have decided since the general meeting you would like to be more involved with the details of accomplishing the items that need taken care of for our guys to play and to have a successful season, please come join us!  Please plan on attending this Tuesday evening at 7:00.  The place to be announced by seperate e-mail.

I will be checking on trying to get Red Land's small cafeteria reserved for us.  I personally would like to see someone chair certain items.  Below is the list of items we will discuss at that meeting where parent assistance and votes are needed to name a few:

    PayPal for rugby account
    Program
Board of Officers/Directors (if someone has experience in the initiation of this, we could use your help)
    Field set-up/take down
    Team t-shirts
Jacket-Warm-up Suit (Coach Robinson and I would like to move our jacket orders to a different vendor to save cost and to include             warm-up pants)
    Kits Bags
    Team Equipment
    Concessions/Post-Game

As this time, we have someone working on getting the sweatshirt orders with the vendor and will very soon be taking them.  Orders will be open to anyone interested (players, friends, family members, etc.).  Details will be forthcoming.

As you can see, the team has grown to an elite level with much activity which imposes the need of much more assistance.  If you would like to vote on certain topics that come up for discussion, please attend.  These items concern the expenses of the team.

Thank you,
Stacey Fink

Revised Sponsor Form
Mon 1/28/2008 9:22 AM

Players, Parents, Alumni, Supporters,

I have attached a revised sponsorship form for Spring Program that we are putting together for the 2008 Season.  There will also be a link on the website for the forms.  Please use the attached form instead of the one from the packet that we handed out at the meeting in January.  This packet looks much more professional and has more contact information for the sponsors.  If you already used the packet from January that is OK, just use this form from now on.  Alumni and supporters, we can use your help.  If you know of any businesses that would be willing to sponsor us, please give them a packet.  If you haven't sold any adds yet, here are some places that you might want to approach that will probably buy and ad:

    Your current employer
Susquehanna Sports Center (Bring an ad form to Wednesday's practice.  First one to ask will more than likely get the sale)
Twin Ponds Giant Weis Wegmans Brusters ice cream Brothers Pizza in Highland Park Jo Jo's Pizza in the Cedar Cliff Mall Pizza Grille Rock it Pizza U.S.A. and I Pizza Roberto's Pizza in Camp Hill The Pizza place near Trinity Two Brothers Pizza Ciao Pizzaria in Highland Park Calico Jacks Bumber Bob's Dairy Delights Highland Gardens Nursery Oxford Hall Irish Gift Shop in New Cumberland Crimson Frog in the Cedar Cliff Mall Guillifty's in the Cedar Cliff Mall Prevail Salon (near Cedar Cliff) Hillside Restaurant Culhanes Restaurant Alpine Inn Fountainbaleu skate rink Photo Box in Camp Hill Red Cedar Gym Gold's Gym L.A. Fitness CPRS- Physical Therapy Dr. Cox Valley Green Golf Course Coakley's Restaurant in New Cumberland Neato Burrito in New Cumberland or Lemoyne The Collesuim Restaurant ACE Hardware Bubba's Breakaway ABC Brewery and Restaurant Slacks Hoagie Shack Cinema Center Camp Hill Newberry diner Summit Restaurant/Diner

These are all places that I thought of off of the top of my head.  Just go to these places with the sponsorship packet and ask to talk to a manager.  Give the packet to them and make sure you follow up with them if they don't purchase a sponsorship that day.  The worst that can happen is they say no.  If we can get the ad sales done, we won't have to worry about fund raising the rest of the season.

Thanks,
Coach Robinson

Car Pooling and Penn State Camp
Wed 1/30/2008 8:29 AM

Parents,

As you know we are going to the Penn State Camp the weekend of Feb. 15,16,17.  I am sending this email out because we need to make sure that we have enough parent volunteers to drive the boys to the camp and to help chaperone them in their down time.  As of right now the only adults that have committed to go to the camp are Mrs. Fink, Kim Little (Jake Fink's Aunt and one of our team photographers in case you didn't know) and Mr. Acri.  For the safety of the boys, I prefer that adults drive.  We need your help, so if you are free that weekend, please join us in Happy Valley.

If there is a parent that would like to take the lead on organizing the car pooling to Penn State and future games, I would really appreciate it.  This was actually one of the jobs on the sign up sheet at the initial meeting.

Thanks,
Coach Robinson

Team Photos
Wed 1/30/2008 9:49 PM

Players and Parents,

Team photos will be taken on Friday 2/29 at Red Land High School.  Pictures will be taken at 3:30 and we will leave for the Radford Tournament after pictures are done.  I have attached the order form.  Please note that there are no bobble heads available for rugby.  I have attached the email of the photographer, Michael Bressi.  If you have any questions regarding the order form or anything else regarding the photos, please contact him.

West Shore United Players, Parents and Alumni,

This is just a reminder to all players, alumni and parents that there is a rugby referee certification course being held this Saturday at 9:00 AM at the Elks Lodge in Camp Hill.  Cost of the course is $45.  That $45 dollars is reimbursed to you after you ref your first game.  This is a great opportunity for experienced players and parents to gain a greater knowledge of the game.  It is also a great way to give back to the game and to also make some extra money on the weekends.  Refs get paid in the neighborhood of $50-$100 per game based on their rating level.  If you don't have any plans this Saturday I highly recommend attending this course and getting your referee certification.  It will make you a better player and fan.

Subject: PSU Winter Rugby Clinics

Greetings all, I trust that you have all been able to get your questions answered, and your kids registered by this point.

We realize that this year we are requiring some changes, and that the online system currently isn't very user friendly.  As such, after several meetings I have been able to get the folks administrating our clinics now to come up with a paper version of the registration that will still be accepted this year. Hopefully, by next winter we will have all the bugs worked out, and come up with a much more user friendly online version.

In the mean time, if you cannot, or have not been able to register, you can use the attached form and bring it with you.  There will also be forms here during registration in case of late additions and such.  There is still space available for both Clinics, so please don't think that it's too late, or believe any deadline information you may have seen.  I was also told that this information, and the form, will be placed on the registration website asap.

Also, in an effort to help you out in the never ending feeding of the hungry mob after our late session on Saturday night (and getting everyone in their rooms as early as possible) we have put together something with a local eatery.  You will be able to pre-order one of three meal options, and pick them up after practice Saturday night.

Large Burrito (beef, chicken, or veggie) and a drink (water or Gatorade) - $6
    Small Burrito and a drink - $5
Two soft tacos and a drink - $5

More information, and an order form will be coming out shortly.  I have personally eaten there, and they are good.
Just thought this might make it easier to get everyone something to eat quickly, and go straight back to the hotel.

Okay, well, I hope this helps, and if you still have any questions, feel free to contact me.  Looking forward to another successful year of Penn State Winter HS Clinics, and we thank you for your support of our program.

Cheers.
Don Ferrell.

Election of Booster Club Officers Next Tuesday!!!
Thu 1/31/2008 11:16 PM

We're happy to report that we no longer have to rely on Red Land High School to provide us with a location for our WSU meetings.  The Fishing Creek Community Association (FCCA) has a building at 520 Locust Road (next to the Red Land Midget football field) that it shares with one of the Fairview Township Fire Departments.  The building is heated, can accommodate over 100 people and we are welcome to use it anytime Monday through Friday after 7:30 pm.

With that said, we would like to schedule another Booster Club Meeting to be held at the FCCA building next Tuesday, 2/5, at 7:45 pm.  All parents are invited and encouraged to attend as the primary purpose of the meeting is to:

Ø Adopt articles of association and agreement
Ø Adopt club bylaws and operating procedures
    Ø Elect officers
Ø Discuss our application for status as a 503 (c) organization as defined by the IRS
Ø Discuss the Booster Club status and recognition by the Commonwealth.

Whether we like it or not, the club has grown to a size that requires us to follow rules and regulations set up by the State and Federal Government.  Dave Steffen has done the research and has graciously volunteered to coordinate the effort needed to bring us into compliance.  One major requirement is to have an elected executive body which includes, at a minimum, a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

So….. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!  If any of you are interested in holding one of these four positions then please let me know by email before Tuesday's meeting so that I can include your name on the ballot.  We're not looking for people to nominate other people.  We need you to nominate yourself!  Please keep in mind that the vote will carry by a simple majority of the people present at the meeting so it is very important that you make every effort to attend the meeting.

At a high level, the President will be responsible for managing the activities of the club that have been assigned to others to get done.  The VP will stand in for the President in his/her absence, will also help to coordinate activities and will take on some responsibilities of their own.  The Secretary will take the minutes and help with clerical tasks and the Treasurer will keep the books.

Connie Intrieri functioned as our sole officer in the first two years of the clubs existence and Stacey Fink took the baton from her last year.  Sean helped with that effort too and many of us jumped in and helped with activities as needed.  Connie and Stacey did a great job, as did everyone else that stepped up to the plate when needed (I would name names but I think we all know who they were/are).  It's really amazing how our team has grown from a handful of kids who could barely spell rugby, let alone play it, to a championship level team.  Our organization structure should and must follow suit.

Respectfully,
Jared Moore

p.s.  We are in desperate need of parents to coordinate and chaperone the Penn State Camp, the Radford Festival and the York College Tournament which are all fast approaching.  Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in helping with these efforts too.  Time permitting we will discuss this and other pressing items.
